Missing you

It is 9years since you were suddenly taken from us and I dont think you ever knew how much your kids loved you and would miss you. Each year we mourn your passing in our own way but together we are joined in grief for the absence of the parents we all loved. YOU were a wonderful person and I know that you would be so proud of us all.

A Tribute to George

Our George arrived on the 24th April, 1936. Pearl and Thelma came later. We lived in Thomson Street, Hendon. I was five. As soon as he could walk he was full of mischief, (in the nicest way). When the time came for him to start school our mother (Jen Mcknight) took him. When she returned home a neighbour asked if she had taken him to school, my mother said she had, the neighbour said that he wasn't there now as he was sitting on the back step. He eventually got there after a few more attempts. As time went on he got to like school, (he found out that he could be a leader).
If someones kids were missing you just had to find George and there they would be, either planning or carrying out their latest pranks. Mrs Tyler was a target - If I get hold of that George ???????????? - He knew he was in trouble with her quite often so coming home anytime he would have to make sure the coast was clear before he could run into his front door. I don't think she ever caught him.

George wasn't very tall, but he had a strong will and could take care of himself as some boys found out if they picked on him. One mother brought her son to the house shouting your son has been hitting my boy, my mother asked me what I had hit the lad for, the lad turned to his mother and said it wasn't me that did it but George, the lady looked at George, then clipped her son and told him not to be so soft as George was a good foot smaller than the lad.
George once kept pigeons he used to go to where they nested at the coal staiths on the Docks, he would come home filthy (like an urchin chimney sweep). Mother would dump him in the tub after the family washing had been done. The washing powder in the water would make his skin tingle (I know I went in that tub on a few occassions).
Now we come forward a few years, George started work, that took on a new meaning, with money in his pocket he could now get out with the lads.
At 18 in went in the Army and done his 2 years national service, then back to working life he liked going to pubs and clubs. He joined The Buffs and F.O.S. he could liven up any venue with his jokes and give him a mike he would sing his heart out.

This is just a short extract from Georges life, our Brother from Raymond, Pearl and Thelma. Forever in our hearts, probably still getting up to that mischief wherever he may be, no doubt our mother is still clpping him.

Written by Ray - brother to George.
